THE CITY government of Puerto Princesa is reiterating that its “no mining” policy still prevails and it is not approving any “large scale mining” application despite the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) pronouncement that it is in total contrast with the national government’s mining industry direction.
City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) chief Roger Daquer said that until now, Mayor Edward S. Hagedorn remains faithful in his belief that large scale mining operations are going to destroy Puerto Princesa’s environment.
He said this in reaction to reports that a mining company planning to explore for minerals in Roxas town is encroaching in Langogan and Panggangan, two barangays that are within the city’s territory.
In a radio interview, Daquer said he has also heard about the report and the mining engineer of Fujian mining being interviewed and the city government was assured that its exploration will not intrude in Puerto Princesa’s area.
He also related that the mining engineer of the company has visited his office, but he told him he cannot make any action on his application because Mayor Hagedorn is firm in not accepting large scale mining operations.
“We only go for small scale mining and guano gathering, not large scale mining,” he said, adding unless Mayor Hagedorn changes his mind, that’s the only time they will accept applications.
Small scale mining, he explained, includes gemstones gathering, guano gathering, gravel and sand quarrying that employ locally.
