NINETEEN ACTIVE sympathizers of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) from two barangays in Puerto Princesa have pledged their allegiance back to the government through Rear Adm. Ruperto Rico C. Borromeo, commander of the Western Command (WESCOM).

The event happened during a grand pulong-pulong (public meeting), a joint project between the City Government and WESCOM, held on April 4 in barangays Marufinas and New Panggangan.

The pulong-pulong aims to strengthen the relationship between the residents of the city and the members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, according to Borromeo.

Fourteen of the 19 residents were from Barangay Marufinas while the rest were from New Panggangan. It was noted during the ceremony that some of those who pledged back allegiance to the government were barangay officials.

The former sympathizers promised Borromeo they will no longer support the CPP-NPA to continue moving in their barangays. Instead, they will work hard for peace to be maintained in their area.

“We see that this is where our enemies, the CPP-NPA, are going. They are taking shelter in the forest in Marufinas,” Borromeo said, adding he is thankful that the residents of the two barangays welcomed them warmly.

Borromeo said their regular pulong-pulong wants to assure the people that the military is their partner and that it is here to protect them.
